Phyllis Switzer (1934 – 2021)

She has gone to be with her precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This was the ultimate culmination of a lifetime serving the Lord in her myriad ways – her thoughts and actions, her teaching of her children, and her wide-ranging musical service in the church.

On April 27th, Phyllis succumbed to cancer, complicated by Covid-19 / pneumonia. Despite her suffering, she was cheerfully anticipating what lay ahead as Jesus welcomed her into his arms.
The only child of Rev. Anthony and Jennie Van Zante, Phyllis was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on the 4th of July – and somehow, that seemed so fitting!

After graduation from high school, she studied to become a nurse, but gave that up to marry. Her eventual career path took her from giving piano lessons at home, to employers in Allegan, Grand Rapids, and finally to Orangeville Baptist church where she served as secretary (into her eighties).

Phyl’s marriage to Alvin Vander Klay produced three children – Beth, Randy, and Lisa.
She was married to Harley Switzer in 1986, until his passing from Alzheimer’s in 2004.

Phyllis is survived by Beth (Jeff) Bourdo, Randy (Donna) Vander Klay, Lisa (Dave) Knobloch, her beloved 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, and special cousins Ruth Vander Hart and Dorothy (Leo) Van Sant. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her granddaughter and her husband, Harley.

Her family members and many friends deeply grieve her passing, but understand she is now pain-free, and death is not the end, but a new beginning.

A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, May 1st with visitation at 10 am and service at 11 am, at the Orangeville Baptist Church – 6921 Marsh Rd, Plainwell, MI 49080.

Please observe safety protocols regarding Covid.

Please visit to share a memory or to leave a condolence message for Phyllis's family.

To My Aunt Phyllis and her family how I love you.One year ago this summer we came to see you, we brought a homemade pie, we knew you would love and we sat around your table, ate pie and had coffee and laughed. Was there ever a time when we didn't laugh? You were such a wonderful addition to our family, you made my Uncle Harley the happiest man on earth. Phyllis I must tell you you were a beautiful lady physically and spiritually and in every way. our whole family realized what a good eye uncle Harley had for the woman he wanted for his wife. Phyllis Remember how you and Eli, because the two of you were almost the same age, would send each other birthday cards (every year for the last 20 years or more) you both were claiming how old the other one was. The cards that flew back and forth over the years got so funny my how we laughed and laughed, last summer when Eli and I were at your house for a visit you were telling about your fall and hospital stay and you were so so excited to tell us about the vision you had of seeing JESUS and he told you to go back to your family that it was not your time and so you did go back for a short time. When we got the news this morning that JESUS had called you home we were so saddened but so happy for you. You have finally met JESUS face to face, what a beautiful thing for you. Last summer when we were leaving your house one of the last things you said to us was Judy, if anything happens to either you or Eli make sure one of your children calls me and I said the same thing to you and your daughter and son-in-law called us. We were afraid for that call Jeff and Beth thank you for letting us know. I think we will be seeing you Aunt Phyllis soon and then for eternity we will laugh eat pie and drink the fresh, cool water that JESUS offers us. Eli and Judy
