Obituary

BARNUM, Betty J.
Hickory Corners, MI

Betty Jean Barnum, age 83, of Hickory Corners, went to be with the lord on October 1, 2020 at Rose Arbor in Kalamazoo. Betty was born July 10, 1937 on the Gates Family Farm in Cloverdale, by Dr. Bernard the daughter of Wayne and Alice (Kniss) Gates. Betty attended grade school in Parchment before moving to Delton and graduated from Delton-Kellogg High School in 1958. On September 12, 1970, Betty married Richard Barnum at the Hickory Corners Methodist Church and together they shared 42 years before his passing on March 3, 2012. She worked as a waitress for many years before buying A&B restaurant in Hickory Corners. In her free time, Betty enjoyed playing cards, crafting, embroidery, baking pies, cooking, making holiday candies, Eastern Star Lunch Bunch, ladies group gatherings at Hickory Corners Bible Church, and a 4-H helper. She loved being outdoors, fishing, gardening, canning, and camping. Betty was a longtime member of the Hickory Corners Eastern Star, serving as Grand Matron. Most important to Betty was her family whom she loved and cared for, especially her grandchildren. Betty is survived by her children: Judy (Dan) Alkema, Harold (Kathleen) Barnum, Dennis (Tammy Morse) Barnum; six grandchildren; and sister, MaryLou Willcutt. She was also preceded in death by her parents; husband, David Spaw; and brother, Robert Gates. A memorial service for Betty will be conducted at Hickory Corners Bible Church at a later date. Memorial contributions to Hickory Corners Fire Department or Hickory Corners Bible Church will be appreciated.
