Nash, Nancy J.

Nancy Jane Nash, of Middleville, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2020 at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. Nancy was born on December 22, 1927 in Otsego Michigan, the second daughter of John Wainwright Barton and Loie Sutherland Simpson. Her mother passed away when she was two. She carried memories with her of relatives telling stories about her lovely mother who was so patient with her two young daughters Barbara and Nancy. When she was twelve her father was killed in an auto accident. She and Barbara went to live with their adoring Aunt Alice and Uncle Gene Newcomb who cared for them as their own for the rest of their lives. Nancy graduated from Otsego High School in 1945. She met Douglas W. Nash Jr., a young marine private, the summer of 1944 at Gun Lake and they married in February of 1946 and began raising their family. Her husband (Tucker) passed away in 1954 leaving her to raise their four children. Nancy worked at Kal Equip in Otsego and moved to Kalamazoo after her children graduated. She worked for 25 years for the US Postal Service. She enjoyed playing golf and bowling and participated with friends on leagues in Otsego and Kalamazoo. She was a lifelong fan of the Four Freshmen and was able to meet Bob Flanagan and Ross Barbour, the two surviving members of the original group, at a Four Freshmen Society convention at the tender age of 82. She was an amazing quilter with a special talent for putting just the right patterns and colors together. She hand sewed her first quilt in 1981 and finished her final quilt at the age of 90. She moved to her Little House on the Lake in 2003. The house was located right across the lake from her two sons. Hers was the home where all the kids and grandkids and GREAT GRANDKIDS wanted to hang out. She was preceded in death by her sister Barbara Ann Barton Burr, her son Douglas W. Nash III, her son-in-law E. Lynn Champion, her step grandson Dr. Stephen P. Champion and her beloved dog/companion Maggie. She is survived by her eldest son Thomas (Linda Powers), her daughter Judith Champion, and her youngest son John (Chris Boysen). She leaves behind granddaughters Heather Urschel (Mark), Juli Carter (Michael), grandsons Douglas IV (Cheri), David (Margaret) and Daniel and step granddaughter-in-law Melanie Champion; great grands Ben and Sophie Urschel, Alexis and Eli Carter, Doug V, Katie, Randall, Leah, Dawn, Austin, James, Brooklyn Nash and Jacob (Stacey), Joshua, Lauren and Miranda Champion. She asks that people celebrate her in their own time and place. There will be no service or calling. Her ashes and those of her darling Maggie will be placed by her husband at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. In lieu of flowers please feel free to donate in her name to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or an animal shelter of your choice. So sorry to learn of Nancy's passing. She was a lovely woman who I admired and loved. I enjoyed seeing the pictures of the family. I was blessed to have had my life touched by all of you. It was a hundred years ago, but I often think of the good times I had back then. Still... GO BUCKEYES! LOL
