Alice Lorraine VanderSchuur, age 95 of Wayland, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2020. Alice was born in Jackson, Michigan on February 10, 1925, the daughter of Harvey and Gladys (Smith) VanWestrienen. Alice was a God-fearing person and longtime member of Leighton Church, where she taught Sunday school. She worked in food service for Thornapple-Kellogg Schools and also as a seamstress for Kessler. She was a wonderful baker and was famous for her raised donut recipe. Alice enjoyed spending most of her time working on the dairy farm with her husband. She was proud to be a mother to her eight children but was always welcoming to her many “adoptive children”. Alice had an outgoing personality and a warm heart that will be missed by many. She leaves behind her children: Sharon Doolittle, James (Diane) VanderSchuur, John VanderSchuur, RuthAnn (Jerry) Gore, Tena VanderSchuur, Susan (Tom) Kingsley, Robert VanderSchuur, and Brenda (Mark) Vandefifer; 24 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; sisters: Gertrude, Maxine, Wilma Jean, Pat; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; siblings: Margaret, Esther, Marcella, Jack and Ken. Alice’s family will receive friends on Thursday, September 3, 2020 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Beeler-Gores Funeral Home, Middleville. Private family services will be conducted on Friday, September 4, 2020. Burial will take place in Hooker Cemetery. Memorial contributions to the Leighton Church will be appreciated. Lynn Totten

From, Lynn Totten. When I was a young boy and up through my early teens, I used to spend a couple of weeks of my vacation on the farm. One of my favorite thing to do being a city boy. All of my cousins, had to be up early to start their chores, but the city boy got to sleep in. Aunt Alice always made sure that there was breakfast ready and did not empty her dish wash water from the sink until after I eat. Something she would always do at the start of her workday. I would then head out to play farmer. Aunt Alice was one of the sweetest people you will ever meet, but one time she caught us crawling through her strawberry patch taking strawberries. She yelled from the kitchen window,”If you boys don’t get out of those strawberries there won’t be anything to make jam out of.” Uncle Melvin was a big bear of a man and could look scary to a small boy, but he was a teddy bear at heart. But when Aunt Alice got made, you listened.
