On Tuesday, July 28, 2020, Bruce Jack Drenten, loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away at the age of 79. His final days were spent surrounded by family that Bruce had touched in some small way throughout his very memorable life. Bruce was born on November 14, 1940, in East Grand Rapids, MI. He received his bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Western Michigan University and dedicated 30 years of Engineering to Steelcase in Grand Rapids, MI. On April 22, 1977, he married the love of his life, Judy Drenten. They raised three beautiful children together: Terry, Tracie and Mark. Bruce had a passion for fishing, hunting and inventing. He was a quiet reserved man, who was an avid fisherman that enjoyed spending time on the open waters with the tranquil sounds of nature surrounding him. Bruce also enjoyed his time in the woods hunting in the quiet spaces of his property. He had an inspiring inventive soul and his many ideas and creations inspired generations of creators. Bruce’s ideas were always unique and valuable whether he was creating new designs for his work at Steelcase, inventing exceptional bird houses, or the many inventions to use around his property and home. Bruce was also a dedicated U.S. Army Veteran. His family was incredibly important to him and he always kept them close to his heart. They will always remember his laughter, stubbornness, quick wit, infectious smile, kind and compassionate spirit and courage to fight whatever life threw at him. He was the pillar of his family and was encircled by love, devotion, and will be greatly missed. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, James and Anna Drenten, as well as his loving sister-in-law, Sheila Drenten. He is survived by his wife Judy Drenten, his three children, Terry (Mike) Sanford, Tracie (Todd) Sparks, Mark (Debra) Drenten, his brother Jimmy Drenten, sister Jean (Bob) Potter, 8 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 14, 2020, at Thornapple Valley Church, 2750 M-43, Hastings, MI, 49058, at 4:00 PM. Everyone is welcome to join for a “Celebration of Life” gathering immediately following until 9:00 PM at 608 S. Bassett Lake Road, Middleville, MI, 49333. Please visit to share a memory or to leave a condolence message for Bruce’s family.

Bruce was always the silent guy, always thinking but ready to laugh with you and sometimes at you, but only in good humor, I know that he will be sadly missed by his loved one. My Heart and prayers go out to all of you. Love the Morgans

Meeting Bruce through our neighbor, Mr. Jim, in Rockford was very memorable. The visit on most Wednesdays was full of laughter and stories of growing up were amazing! Bruce will be missed, never forgotten. He touched many hearts and was a great Best Man.

Thoughts and prayers are with Judy and the entire family in the loss of this great man. So many stories and memories from the nearly two decades of knowing Bruce aka Mr. Jim Drenten's son. Bruce was a gentle giant! He loved his family! We will miss Bruce aka Homer! Hope the good times and amazing memories sustain each and all of you in the days and weeks to come!

Thank you so much for your kind words about dad, Mary Lou! He was definitely a gentle giant!! :-) He will be missed so very much! He so enjoyed seeing you both when he'd go visit his dad. Now "Homer" and Grandpa Drenten are enjoying each other again. :-) Tracie Sparks (Daughter of Bruce)
