Obituary

Paul Lawrence Dykstra, age 77, passed away on April 3, 2020 at his home. Paul was born on August 22, 1942 in Byron Center, the son of Henry and Emma (Vander Schuur) Dykstra. A veteran, Paul proudly served his country in the United States Army. Paul worked as a farmer for most of his life. He enjoyed gardening and sharing vegetables with his family and friends. Paul took much pride in all the flowers he raised from seeds. He was a very talented person who was known to be able to build anything with wood or metal. Paul raised pigs for 47 years, providing many 4-H families with their fair pigs. On June 26, 1964, Paul married the love of his life, the former Sheila Welton, and together they shared 55 years. Paul is survived by his wife; children, Brenda (Carl) Blough, Paul “Spike” Dykstra; grandchildren, Paula (Michael) Gamerl, Michaela Blough, Maria Blough, and Austin Dykstra; brothers: Henry (Linda) Dykstra, Russ (Donna) Dykstra, Dave (Barb) Dykstra; sisters, Laura Adams, Carolyn (Jim) Buer; sisters-in-law, Shirley Smith, Barb (Rich) Rose; special niece Cheryl (Greg) Lydy; special friends, Lon Colburn, Frank Vining. Paul's family will receive friends on Saturday, June 13, 2020, 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the Freeport Community Center where his memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Dr. Howard Plattner officiating. Private burial took place in German Cemetery. The family would like to give a special thanks to Spectrum Pennock Cancer Center and Spectrum Health Hospice. Memorial contributions to Spectrum Health Hospice will be appreciated. Please visit www.beelergoresfuneral.com to share a memory or to leave a condolence message for Paul’s family.
