FREY, Karen “Kit”
Lansing, MI

Karen Sue “Kit” Frey, age 72, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness on Friday, January 24, 2020. Kit was born on June 3, 1947 in Battle Creek, the daughter of Robert and Mary (Matthews) Frey. Kit was most recently a Hastings area resident after spending many years in the Lansing area. She was a 1972 Michigan State University graduate. Kit worked as a recreation coordinator for Okemos Community Education for many years. She was a true recreation professional and excelled in organizing sports for all ages from the weewats (Kit’s term) to adults. Baseball was her passion and she took great delight in hosting Lansing Lugnut players in her home for many years. As a senior citizen coordinator, she made everyone welcome at the Meridian Senior Center. Kit enjoyed traveling - anywhere - but particularly Mackinac Island where she often volunteered for the Labor Day Bridge Walk. Kit loved sports, especially the Detroit Tigers and Michigan State, and bled green and white for the Spartans. She truly enjoyed spending time with family, extended family and her cat. Kit had a true passion for life and never left a stone unturned. Kit is survived by her father, Robert Frey; brother, Kenneth (Roxanne) Frey; nieces and nephews, Michael Frey, Rob Frey, Ellie Westworth, Nichole Jones; many great nieces and nephews; many close friends; and former spouse, John Kuschell. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Frey in 2002. Kit’s family will receive friends on Monday, January 27, 2020 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Williams-Gores Funeral Home, Delton, MI where her funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM. with Pastor John Fulton from Bedford Bible Church officiating. During her MSU years, you often would find Kit surrounded by a bevy of young men. Only these guys would be wearing a ball glove and carrying a bat. She truly loved baseball, especially the Tigers , and specifically Al Kaline.
After MSU, she moved to Adrian. Whatever Kit was involved in or wherever she was employed, she put in her whole heart and soul. Not necessarily a leader , but an awesome facilitator. I seem to recall a number of clip boards and lists scattered about. Suppers were often fast and furious because after her day job, she rushed off to the ballpark to score men's softball games. You would often find her seated alone in the bleachers following every pitch. This evening tradition carried on well after her retirement. Beginning in the late 70s and well into the 80s she organized and managed some very successful men's teams.
Her long career in recreation began in the city of Adrian with a highlight being her development of summer youth programs. That was followed by short stints in Coldwater and Sylvania Ohio.
Her wsh was always to return to an area near her beloved MSU. From the mid-80s until her retirement she was very involved and successful in the organization of various recreational programs in Okemos and Delta Township. In addition, she was a helpful contributor in the activities and organization of the Michigan Parks and Rec Association. When Minor League baseball came to Lansing, Kit was one of the first in line to offer housing to some of the young Lugnut players and coaches.
Also dear to Kit was her birthplace near Hastings where she and her loyal brother Ken were brought up on a family farm by two warm and loving parents, Mary and Bob. Kit had hoped to be present for her father's 100th birthday this April.
She was my first love and my forever friend. I will miss the sparkle in her eyes, her non stop enthusiasm, and the steadfast devotion to her friends and associates. I will never forget.

To Kit’s family Cherie and I sent our deepest sympathies. I had the fortunate luck to have been able to be involved with Okemos Community Ed because have me the opportunity. She was an awesome leader and became a friend. She was missed when she left OCE. May God welcome Kit into paradise and my God Bless her soul.

Thanks for everything, Kit.

I shall always cherish my year with Kit as a roommate at MSU in Fee Hall Apartments. We share lots of laughter, good times and memories. Her love of sports and mentoring followed her all through life. My condolences for all of us her were fortunate enough to call her our friend.

When my mother took us to the Frey Farm when I was elementary age, Karen was two grades older than me. Seems like she was always sitting next to a radio listening to a Tiger's game and she always was keeping score in a real score book. In all my years Karen was the only person I ever met who did that.

To Karen’s family and friends I want to send my prayers and best thoughts at this time. Karen has been such an important and happy part of my life. From our dates to the Snowball and Prom Dances, to arguing about Al Kaline and Norm Cash, to many happy times at Hastings High School, Karen made my life happier and fuller. I will miss her, and she will be in my heart always.
