Obituary

Gene F. Wake
Middleville

It is with sorrow to announce that Gene F. Wake, formerly of Hastings, MI, passed away December 14th, 2019 after a short illness. Gene was predeceased by his wife of 50 years Nancy Carroll (Stark) Wake. Gene was born July 1st,1931 in New Castle Indiana to Cloyd and Stella (Field) Wake. Young Gene attended New Castle schools and graduated in 1949. Gene joined the Army, and served first in with a Mortar Unit before transferring into the Finance Corp. After being honorably discharged, he attended Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. It was the start of an academic career that would end with two Bachelors' Degrees and a Master's in Education. It was at Ball State that he met Nancy Stark. The two were married in 1952 and were blessed with three children: Darrell, Steve, and Randy. Gene spent most of his adult life working in Education, spending 30+ years as the Principal of Prairie Heights Elementary. After retirement, he and Nancy took frequent trips to the Southwest and Mexico, often disappearing for weeks at a time on the road. The two moved to Hastings, MI in 1999 to be closer to family. Gene will be remembered for his warm personality, great sense of humor, and a love of Mystery Novels. Later in life, he made it a point to have a beer with his neighbors. His legacy will live on in his sons, their children, and the countless other children whose life he was a part of. He was loved by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and will be missed. Visitation will be on January 2, 2020 at the Beeler-Gores Funeral Home from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorial contributions to Barry County Commission on Aging will be appreciated. I am heartbroken for Gene's family. he was a great person, whom I admired from an early age. He was meticulous in everything he accomplished! He and Nancy were like second parents to me as I grew up spending a great deal of time in their home with Darrell. No one was more gracious and caring when it concerned others. Whether it was the multitude of children under his care, his teaching staff or the many others he had contact with. His imprint on their lives was always positive. I know he will be greatly missed!

Mr.Wake, was a wonderful principal. The Wakes would have us over for supper and play board games. He worked hard at getting to know his staff members. One of the kindest things he did for me was after I had my second child he took my second recess every day , the rest of the year. He said I needed that time to get extra things done so I wouldn't have to take things home with me. I then could devote more time to my family. He always had a smile and a listening ear. He was a kind person who did many great things. Prayers to his family . Tammy Shultz

I remember my father-in-law very fondly. We didn't get together often, but we had good visits when we did. Last time was for Christmas in 2011, and we had fun making ornaments - which I continue to hang on our tree. Although we won't be there in person for the visitation due to health issues, we will definitely be there in spirit. RIP Gene Wake - you are missed!
