Obituary

Peake, Walter L.
Battle Creek

Walter Leroy Peake, age 80, of Battle Creek passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on July 18, 2019. Walter was born in Hope Township on July 10, 1939 the son of Ernest Ray and Bethel Irene (Hallock) Peake. The family relocated to Peacock, Michigan when Walter was about six years old and grew up there with his siblings until shortly after graduation from Baldwin High School. After moving to cousin Ira’s farm in Delton he met his wife Barbara Lee (Stroo) in 1962. Shortly after he was drafted early in the Vietnam War, serving in West Germany for eighteen months. Walter and Barbara were married in 1966 and welcomed their children Dale and Diane in 1971 and 1977. Walter worked for Clark Equipment in Battle Creek for twenty eight years before the company closed in the mid-1980s. He retired from Hayes Machine in Marshall in 2001. He spent his retirement traveling with his wife, Barbara, fishing with his son, Dale, helping his daughter, Diane with her horses, and spoiling his granddaughters. Walter enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family. He earned the nickname “MacGyver” from his family due to his amazing ability to repair almost anything. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers: David, Russell, Leo, and Robert; sisters: Dorothy and Donna. Walter is survived by his wife: Barbara; children: Dale and Diane; three grandchildren; three brothers, and many nieces and nephews. Walter’s family will receive friends on Sunday, 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Williams-Gores Funeral Home were his celebration of life will be conducted on Monday, July 22, 2019, 11:00 AM. Walter’s son, Dale Peake will officiate. Burial with full military honors conducted by American Legion Post 45 will take place in Cedar Creek Cemetery. I had the honor to help assist Barb, Walter's wife in taking care of him. Walter had the brightest and most cheerful smile that I have ever seen. Over the time period I was helping with Walter, the Love that I seen this family have for each other and all they come in touch with is AMAZING. Walter will be truly missed but I know he is in heaven. Cindy Youngs
