Obituary for Thomas J. Straayer

Straayer, Thomas John (Tom) of Middleville, Michigan, passed away on Wednesday May 29, 2019. Tom was a 1960 graduate of Creston High School and Grand Rapids Junior College, where he was a member of Sigma Kappa Omega fraternity. In 1962, he enlisted in the US Air Force and served four years at Luke AFB, in Glendale, Arizona , honorably discharged with the rank of Sargent, Aircraft Maintenance Technician.

Tom was employed B&B Distributing, (Alliance Beverage), followed by many years at Freightliner, where on retirement he was Parts Department Manager.

Tom played Little League baseball as a youth and continued through his high school and college years as a state ranked Shortstop. On returning from the Air Force he played for many adult leagues in the Grand Rapids area.

He was an avid golfer and spent many hours on the golf course with his family and friends, especially his sister Mary and his brother-in-law Jim, where he demonstrated his eight-handicap. He was a passionate fan of the Detroit Tigers, the University of Michigan, and the Detroit Lions.

Tom is pre-deceased by his parents John J. and Dorothea M. Straayer, his sister Mary M. Carroll, and His brother-in-Law, James (Jimmy) Stewart. He is survived by his soulmate and companion of 35 years, Joyce M.Wiley, his sister Martha (Marty) Stewart of Richmond Virginia, his children Renee (Chris) Koops, John Straayer, and Sandra Straayer, as well as his grand children, Bella Straayer and Cohen Koops.

A memorial service will take place at Beeler-Gores Furneral Home located at 914 West Main Street Middleville, Michigan 11 AM Saturday June 1, with a visitation at 10 AM. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post 45. Following the service, all are invited to a celebratory lunch for family and friends at Red's Sports Bar and Grill at 661 South Broadway St (M37), Middleville, Michigan.
