Justin was a frequent customer at my place of work. He loved to order Lemon Drops, and hangout with his friends, there. We talked so many times, about so much, his Dunkin Dog, his family, he loved riding his bike, and hunting. One time, he even brought me venison, to my home, because i wanted some so badly, free of charge. Just out of the kindness of his heart.. he even offered to dog sit for me if I ever needed it.. He was completely selfless. He lived an amazing life. And i will miss him.. :(

I didn't know Justin well but I knew very quickly he was the type of Soldier and person we really wanted and needed in the Military! I met him a few times as he helped me with things at Ft. Custer. It wasn't his job to help with housing but since it's co-located in the same building he worked in and no one was in the housing area SSG Skaggs put down his duties for a few minutes and went out of his way to find someone that could help me. I next met him in April of this year, this time I was the new Battalion Command Sergeant Major for the unit he was in. During this meeting I had the honor and privilege of presenting SSG Skaggs a BN Coin of Excellence for a 6 year extension to his Michigan Army National Guard (MIARNG) service contract. This was special to me because it was the first Coin I was authorized to present as a brand new Command Sergeant Major. It meant a lot to me to be able to present it to SSG Skaggs as in only the few chance meetings with him I could tell he loved what he did for the MIARNG and he loved leading Soldiers. He stood out once again during our May Drill weekend as we prepared for a vehicular movement from Detroit to Camp Grayling. SSG Skaggs was the movement officer and was delivering the safety briefing. As this was a very important briefing he commanded 100% attention from everyone in the area, including myself as the BN CSM since I was to be a passenger in one of the vehicles he was in charge of that weekend. He took his duties very seriously as there was the safety of 50+ persons and hundreds of thousands of dollars in personal and military equipment depended on the information he was presenting. I was very impressed with him.
